Learn how you can keep your business running in case of an accident

There’s no such thing as a risk-free life. No matter who you are, you’re subject to risks on a daily basis and if you’re running a business, it’s no different. You might be among the many female entrepreneurs out there who got through a challenging business environment to establish your own. When you’ve put in the work to build your business from the ground up, you wouldn’t want it to fail for any reason. However, the impact of risks can be minimized to some extent by cultivating awareness of our environment and being mindful of our actions. As we face countless risks, best to bear in mind these preparatory initiatives to help you handle the financial strain that comes with an accident so your business can stay afloat.1. Come up with an emergency response plan. Outline the steps to be taken immediately after an accident. This includes ensuring the safety of employees, securing the premises, and contacting relevant authorities. For instance, among the most common are road accidents. You can arm yourself from the financial distress of car repairs and medical expenses that may arise from these road accidents with car insurance that goes beyond the basics. AXA Philippines’ comprehensive car insurance, for example, provides customizable medical coverage for bodily injuries and coverage for vehicle and property damages (with an option to add coverage for damages caused by acts of nature). It also comes with 24/7 roadside assistance for emergency cases.2. Back up your systems and data regularly. Ensure that you have backup files of your business-critical data and systems and that these are updated on a frequent basis.3. Establish remote work capabilities. Set up work arrangements and provide employees with the necessary tools to continue their tasks from off-site locations. This allows your business to operate even if the physical workplace is inaccessible.4. Get insurance coverage. Invest in appropriate insurance coverage, such as property insurance and business interruption insurance. This can help cover financial losses incurred due to accidents that disrupt regular operations.5. Identify communication channels. Maintain updated contact lists for employees, clients, suppliers, and stakeholders.6. Be consistent with customer communication. Keep customers informed about the situation, the steps you're taking to address it, and any potential disruptions on services or products.7. Build financial resilience. Sustain your financial capability with a fund that can be accessed in times of crisis. This can help cover unexpected expenses and sustain your business during recovery.Anything can happen whether you’re at home, on the road, abroad or even at your own workplace. It pays to always have the presence of mind and foresight to prepare for possible threats to keep your business afloat. Being ready for the physical and financial consequences brought by accidents can help maintain and preserve the funds you’ve set aside for your business. By having insurance, you don’t have to take from these funds and your business can run smoothly and uninterrupted.Consider AXA as your partner for your protection needs. What vitamins do pregnant women need to take?

Folic acid is among the recommended vitamins for pregnant women in the PhilippinesA pregnant woman is responsible for two lives—hers and her unborn child’s. Anything that she consumes directly affects the baby’s growth and development inside the womb. This is why expecting moms are usually prescribed prenatal vitamins and supplements alongside a healthy, varied diet. Among the essential vitamins for pregnant women in the Philippines is folic acid. Folic acid is important for both a woman’s wellbeing, and the health of her unborn child.Folic acid is the synthetic form of folate, a B vitamin that is crucial in the production of healthy blood cells. This is vital during periods of rapid growth and development, which is what the fetus is going through inside the womb. It also helps form the infant’s neural tube, which will grow into the baby’s brain and spinal column. However, research suggests that there is a high number of Filipino women who need more folate in their diets to carry out healthy pregnancies. A 2020 study found that two in ten women in the study had insufficient folate needed to prevent neural tube defects.A lack of folic acid has been connected to birth defects in the brain (anencephaly) and spine (spina bifida). Folic acid isn’t just for expecting womenHowever, folic acid isn’t just for pregnant women or those who want to have children – it also plays a key role in breaking down homocysteine, an amino acid that is harmful to the body in high amounts. Some studies also suggest that there is a strong connection between high homocysteine levels and Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. Folic acid supplementation can also reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke. If paired with iron, folic acid can help in the prevention of anemia. Women of reproductive age are recommended to take at least 400 micrograms (mcg) of folic acid every day, and to eat foods that naturally contain folate. Good sources of this are: ●     Eggs●     Seafood●     Whole grains●     Fresh fruits & fresh fruit juices●     Beans & peanuts●     Dark green leafy vegetables (broccoli, Brussels sprouts, asparagus, romaine lettuce, spinach) It’s a good idea to check the package labels of foods like rice, bread, pasta, cereal, and other grain products if they are enriched with folate. Making sure you have the right nutrition is essential to having a healthy pregnancy. Partners of expecting moms can help by making sure that they get the healthy food they need, as well as regularly take their folic acid supplements.Always remember to check with your doctor before trying new supplements, especially when pregnant.1. How a diagnosis of breast cancer can change us

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the Philippines with 3 out of 100 women expected to be diagnosed in their lifetime. Conversations about preventing, treating, and living with cancer are not easy but these are important stages of the cancer journey for both the patient, their families, and friends. With October being breast cancer awareness month, we share some information about how to respond to and support a loved one if they are diagnosed with cancer. It is important to remember that there is no manual on how to react to the news. The initial shockCancer diagnosis usually comes as a shock. Sometimes the mind jumps to questions like: Am I going to die? Is the diagnosis correct? What do I do? Will I lose my breast? Will I lose my hair? How will my life change? What would usually follow are emotional processing, gathering of professional opinions and information on next steps and available treatments, confirming if the diagnosis is correct, understanding the disease, and the risks and effects of treatments.  What friends and family should keep in mind· Breast cancer is not a death sentence. Although we associate cancer with death, chances are high that people have been and are living with the cancer since their diagnosis. A breast cancer diagnosis and undergoing treatment is only one part of living. · Cancer is a diagnosis for an entire family and support group. It affects everyone around the person diagnosed. It can change relationships between friends and family for both the worse and the better.· Life can change at any point. We have that misconception and misinformation as a society that it will not happen to me or to someone close to me. Don’t shy away from having difficult conversations when yourself or someone you know is diagnosed. How we react could fall everywhere on a wide spectrum. There are those who are not ready to deal with the news and might just disappear. Then, there are also those who would commit unconditionally and are there for patients every step of the way. Most people fall somewhere in the middle — wanting to be there because they sincerely care, but not knowing how. They alternate between not seeming to care and not wanting to overstep. The do’s and don’tsIf someone you know has been diagnosed with breast cancer and shared the news with you, don’t be afraid to show your support and ask what they need.Sharing love, listening, and simply showing up can be a big part of their healing and support as they undergo the experience of diagnosis, treatment, and post-treatment. How we react matters so we must also be conscious of this.Remaining positiveLove and friendship. While going through challenging periods in life, we get to see those who are really there for us and realise the strength of their love.Gratitude. When confronted with illness, it helps us to stop taking things for granted. There is much to learn about being grateful.Acceptance. It is also easy to reject negative emotions and this is the opposite of acceptance. Acknowledge the negative without criticizing, judging, or trying to will yourself into being different because that is what you think you should do. Trying to take “should” out of the vocabulary helps.New people and perspectives. In dealing with cancer, most would undergo many new experiences and encounter new people and perspectives. For instance, there is a lot to learn from other treatment and healing methods practiced in other cultures.Empathy and forgiveness. Many of us experience difficult times, whether it is a disease, a loss, pain, or insecurity. We have no way of knowing what someone else is experiencing but what we can certainly do is to be more empathetic and forgiving as well as be willing to listen. The increasing number of breast cancer survivors and vast improvements in science and research give hope that one day we will have a cure. In the meantime, we get to learn and appreciate life in all its complexity and beauty. As we acknowledge those living with cancer, we can better understand the disease and support each other through and after. Cancer and other critical illnesses can be diagnosed when we least expect them and may persist. In such cases, AXA’s wide range of health solutions covering critical illnesses can help you be more prepared. Beginnings of a business: Important takeaways for budding entrepreneurs

Take your cue from the stories of today’s biggest names. With the varying quarantine restrictions brought about by the global pandemic, a lot of things have changed in the way goods and services are purchased. From brick-and-mortar stores, most businesses shifted to pickups and deliveries. This change has also allowed new small businesses to enter the scene in the past few months without shelling out too much in capital, as transactions are now mostly done online. Thinking of starting your own business? Before you jump into your venture headfirst, know that the road to success can be full of bumps. While you may not be able to avoid them entirely, you can learn from how today’s big names grew their businesses. First things first: What do you want to offer? Is there a need that your product or service can address or bridge the gap to? This is an important thing to consider, especially in today’s situation where some industries do not have the same demand as they used to pre-pandemic. Plus, with a lot of people now venturing into startups, the products or services you offer must be of great value to stand out. Apart from that, how to avail of your products or services is a main consideration, as most businesses have shifted online or operate physical stores in a limited capacity. This means that it is important to pay attention to your target market or your customers. Robin Chase, the former CEO of Zipcar, a car-sharing and car club service, shares a major mistake committed with her second company, a social, online ride-sharing business. “We spent too much money on the website and software before engaging with our first customers,” she tells Buffer. While there is merit in polishing your product or improving your service, you have to make sure that these factors do not get in the way of one of the most important relationships your business will ever have: the one with your customers. It is a smart move to reach out to your potential customers first before rolling out a new innovation. The late Henry Sy Sr., the man behind the biggest mall operator in the country, believed that success is a mix of several factors that include hard work, opportunity, and timing. Esquire Philippines’ quotes roundup included Sy’s quote on success: “Success is not just good luck: It is a combination of hard work, good credit standing, opportunity, readiness, and timing. Success will not last if you do not take care of it.” In 1958, he already envisioned that if he could sell a pair of shoes to every Filipino, he could be successful, according to an article by My Story, My SM. Seeing how the brand evolved into the retail giant that it is today, perhaps their recipe for success had most of those elements he mentioned, if not all.All the talk about success would make one think that there is no room for mistakes. However, for Jollibee Foods Corporation founder and chairman Tony Tan Caktiong, mistakes are part of the process. “If you dream big and put your dreams into action, you will inevitably make mistakes. But don’t be scared to make mistakes,” he shares in the 2013 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) small and medium enterprises (SME) Summit. In his case, his group tried to start brands like Mary’s Chicken and Copenhagen ice cream, but these did not take off. “Learn from each mistake and it will not be a waste of your time,” he says, and went on to establish one of the biggest food businesses in the country. It also helps to always be on the lookout for opportunities to grow your business. What may be effective today might not work three months from now, especially with the ongoing pandemic. It is important to regularly ‘feel the pulse’ of your consumers—whether it’s through surveys, or monitoring your social media account and analyzing customer reviews. It also helps to be up to date with trends to ensure that your product or service remains to be relevant and sensitive with the changing times.Starting a business is not easy, but it can be one of the most fulfilling thing you’ll do. While there may be speed bumps ahead, it does not need to derail your success.  You can protect your hard work from the unexpected by getting an insurance package for your business. With Business Security, a comprehensive insurance made for business owners, you won’t have to worry about damages or loss due to fire or lightning, including acts of nature, disrupting your business. It also comes with a personal accident insurance for your employees, and coverage for money, securities, and payroll. With those covered, you’re well on your way to success.

5 things that can go a long way when you’re starting a business

Check out these tips to help give your startup an edge. You have a groundbreaking idea, enough capital, and ample time to bring your dreams of becoming an entrepreneur—that’s great! However, keeping a business afloat for a long time takes more than these things. Even the most passionate individual might not be able to sustain a business, no matter the size, if he or she fails to look into and employ the seemingly small yet highly significant things that help businesses thrive. As an entrepreneur, you want to be in it for the long run. To help you start, read through these five tips that will help give your business an edge and ensure its longevity:1. Conduct extensive market research. Before starting your business, you need to conduct primary market research to know your competition, potential customers, and possible partners. Doing so will greatly help you create a more solid business strategy. This also applies to those who have already dipped their feet into their venture—research should be an ongoing process to ensure that your business will do well in the months and years to come.2. Choose your online platform. With over 70 million social media users in the Philippines in 2019, it only makes perfect sense to give your venture an online presence, especially now that consumers have adapted to buying what they need online. Consider having at least one social media account up, so you can focus on one platform first and familiarize yourself with its features. Setting up a Facebook page is one option, as it is the most popular social media platform among Filipinos today. Some business owners go for Instagram, especially when their branding is visuals-heavy. Whichever platform you choose, it must be able to help you build your brand, engage with your customers, and understand the needs and wants of your audience better. 3. Hire an accountant.Even if you’re running a startup or a small online shop, hiring an accountant to manage the finances will definitely do your business good. Accountants perform various roles in businesses, including bookkeeping, preparing financial reports, and ensuring regulatory and reporting compliance, among others. It’s also one way to create structure or professionalize your business.4. Attend online seminars.Despite your busy schedule in setting up your business, find time to attend events and conferences. There are a lot of online conferences and webinars nowadays, where you can discover the latest trends and learn from the experience of some of your chosen industry’s best practices. This is also a good way to network and meet similar people who can help you now and in the future. You won’t be able to predict what can happen during the course of running your business. An insurance coverage can help you prepare for the unexpected. From startups to corporations, businesses greatly benefit from the protection insurance offers.  When your enterprise is covered from losses incurred from unforeseen events, you can concentrate on growing your venture and chasing after opportunities to make it even bigger.  With Business Security, you can get coverage that’s tailored to the needs of your business whether small, medium, or micro. Protect your business against damage or loss due to fire, robbery and burglary, and natural disasters such as earthquakes, typhoons, and floods. It’s best to get these things in place as soon as you start your business, so you can enjoy the fruits of your passion and hard work for a long time.

Off to the dealership: What you need to know before purchasing your second car

Simplify the search and decision-making for your next vehicle.Having a bigger family entails changing up a few things, lifestyle-wise. Gone are the days when you simply needed a ride, reliable or otherwise, to get around in. Perhaps you opted for a hand-me-down or second-hand model for your first car or two, or maybe you selected the cheapest option on the dealer's list. But now, maybe you already have an incoming college student and will need to drive on his own or your wife needs a car to shuttle from your house to work. Whether you need a bigger vehicle to accommodate your family or you have saved up enough cash to replace your old car, there are things to consider, ideally before you swing by a car dealership.1. Pinpoint your reasons for buying a second carYour car should have enough space and features to cater to your needs. Consider if you are upgrading or if you have specific needs in terms of space. A mini hatchback or subcompact sedan might have cut it in your younger, more carefree days, but now you have family trips, groceries, school supplies, and maybe a growing business to think about. A crossover or an MPV (ideally with seven seats) are some segments to consider. For bigger families, there are a multitude of vans and midsize SUVs to choose from. As for features, opt for models equipped with things like Isofix (attachment points for child safety seats), keyless entry, and electronic driving aids. 2. Learn from your previous experienceYou already know the things that come with purchasing a car, and it’s also what you’ll need to remember when you purchase your next vehicle. As with most purchases, your utmost priority should be quality. You should scour testimonials to learn which models are reliable over years of use. Forums, Facebook groups, and car reviews are good places to start. Look for owner insights on common faults, maintenance costs, parts availability, and after-sales service. Also ensure that the model you choose has a good safety rating, especially if you have kids in tow. Choosing the right ride can mean years of service and convenience not just for you, but for your entire family too.3. Decide on the brand that can match your after-sales expectations Think long and hard in choosing which brand you will buy from. Sure, you want to convey your success to the world, but it goes beyond simple materialism. Go with a brand with a good reputation for reliable and affordable after-sales service. Talk to car owners of brands you are interested in and ask about their experiences after they purchased their cars. Again, you want your car to last a long time, so it’s best to go with a brand that will help you accomplish that. More importantly, opt for a brand that’s convenient for you and your situation. Consider the following: Is there a service center near your house or work? Are parts readily available? Can you contact your dealer or service center easily? These are some important points you need to consider. 4. Get your new car insuredA good car insurance plan will protect your car in the unfortunate event of an accident or other mishaps like damages or theft, and even acts of nature. This is why getting your ride insured is extremely important. AXA offers Car Insurance Online, a comprehensive car insurance product, which covers loss, damage, and liabilities, available online. Plus, get free 24/7 access to roadside assistance with Rescue Line by AXA. Its services include towing, crane, and minor onsite repair services such as change of flat tires, battery boosting and emergency fuel delivery. It is also supported by Roadside Emergency Tracker Assistance, where you can track the tow truck on its way to you through your phone. Remember: If you’re willing to spend on a good car, then it pays to invest on your peace of mind.
